Nine of the best markets in Greater Manchester

14.12 By Jeng Eni

From street food to arts and crafts, Great Manchester has a wealth of top notch markets that are well worth a visit

Markets in Manchester have been seen a huge resurgence recently, and show no sign of slowing down.

What used to be the backbone of many communities died away after the dominance of supermarkets - but we could be on the brink of a market comeback. Bolton council has pumped almost £4.5mi into their markets recently, while the Grade II listed Mackie Mayor in Manchester is in line for a major restoration.

With new markets cropping up across the city and a bunch of renovations on the horizon, it's much easier to be canny with your cash and support local traders.

Markets provide a platform for indies to set up shop. From seasonal produce to to artisan pies, local photography to handmade jewellery, support the local community by dishing out your dollar to independent traders on your doorstep.

Altrincham Market, Great Manchester

Winners of Best Market at the Observer Food Monthly Awards, Alty Market is a must-visit and a testament to the unwavering ambition of its directors to promote the identity and culture of the North West.

What does it sell? The market hosts a permanent selection of food and drink traders indoors at Market House, and a changing line up of traders outside.

When? Market House: Tues–Sat 9am-10pm, Sun 9am–6pm; Altrincham Market: Tues 8am–4pm, Thurs 8am–3pm, Fri 8am–4pm, Sat/Sun 10am–4pm

Anything else? The indoor market gets busy. Very busy. So arrive early to bagsy a table if you're planning on eating or drinking at Market House.

Levenshulme Market, Great Manchester
Something of a local success story, Levenshulme market is a social enterprise run by residents with a view to boost the local economy and community.

What does it sell? With the market's relaunch this month, organisers promise a bigger and better line up of traders. Each week it's a hand-picked selection of artisan food, drink, arts and crafts.

When? Sat 10am–4pm

Anything else? Make a day of it and swing by Trove and the Levenshulme Antiques Village, just a few minutes walk from the train station.
